AFL: Everything You Need To Know
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the pre-eminent professional Australian rules football league. Here's everything you need to know.
What is AFL?
AFL is a sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval-shaped field. The main objective is to score by kicking the oval-shaped ball between the two central goal posts. It's a fast-paced, high-contact sport known for its spectacular marks (catches), tackles, and athleticism. — O-1 Visa: Are You Eligible?
Key Aspects of the AFL:
- The Field: The field is an oval, and there are no fixed dimensions.
- Scoring:
- A goal (6 points) is scored by kicking the ball between the two tall central posts.
- A behind (1 point) is scored by kicking the ball between a central and an outer post, or if the ball is touched before going through for a goal.
- Gameplay: Players can run with the ball, but must bounce it or touch it to the ground at least once every 15 meters. They can also dispose of the ball by kicking or hand-balling (punching) it.
- Tackling: A player can tackle an opponent to dispossess them of the ball, but tackles above the shoulders or below the knees are illegal.
